The Town

Las Catalinas is a car-free coastal town on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, designed under the principles of New Urbanism. Castillo Arquitectos takes part in the community’s ongoing development of buildings, contributing to both the residential and mixed-use architecture that gives it form.

Architecture

Plaza del Mercado is a mixed-use building that frames a civic plaza, with retail at ground level and flats above. It responds to the town’s Mediterranean and Latin American colonial architectural language while expressing its own character.

The result is a walkable plaza where daily life unfolds among shaded walks, paths, and shops. Plaza del Mercado Flats received a Design Excellence award by the New Urban Guild in 2025.
